Update:

Power has been restored at Emerson and Da Vinci JH.

Dear Emerson/Da Vinci Junior High families,

Due to the rain and wind, the Emerson/Da Vinci campus is currently experiencing a power outage.  All classes are still in session and pick up is scheduled as normal.  At this time, school staff members are not able to take phone calls or receive emails.   We have been informed that PG&E is working on restoring power at the campus and in other parts of West Davis.  We will send updates later today if there are changes to after school activities.

If you have questions, you may contact the Public Information Office at 530-757-5300 x149.

Due to to worsening air quality, and out of an abundance of caution, Davis Joint Unified School District, along with all other school districts in Yolo County, is closing all schools and offices on Friday, November 16.

Over the last few days, DJUSD has been regularly monitoring worsening the air quality and conferring with the Yolo County Office of Education, Yolo County Health Department and the Yolo/Solano Air Quality Management District. The decision to close schools due to air quality is not taken lightly and is unprecedented. Our top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff.

We anticipate the conditions to improve significantly over the next week and look forward to a return to normal school routines, outdoor activities and athletics after Thanksgiving Break. Any updates over Thanksgiving Break will be shared as quickly as possible with our school community by email and available here on the DJUSD website as well as on DJUSD Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you for your partnership and understanding.

Air Quality Update: Schools Remain Open Thursday, November 15

The air quality forecast in our region continues to predict poor air quality levels for the remainder of the week.

Davis schools will remain open and the restrictions on all outdoor activities will remain throughout the week so as to limit exposure to poor air quality.

  • Restrictions on outside activities continue:
All students shall remain indoors - this includes recess, lunch period and physical education class.
  • Doors to classrooms will be kept closed to limit exposure to poor air quality.
  • Outside activities, field trips and sports are suspended until further notice.
  • All athletic programs through Davis Senior High School have been postponed or moved indoors. Keep updated on athletics at Davis Senior High Athletics.

Parents are advised to contact their school office directly for the latest information regarding school-specific plans about physical education classes, lunch schedules, or other questions and concerns.

DJUSD continues to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) and will keep our school community updated with any changes. We recognize that individuals may have questions about their individual student or personal needs and these can be directed to school offices or the Public Information Office at communications@djusd.net.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How are decisions made to cancel school?
DJUSD is carefully monitoring the air quality reports and forecasts. Staff continues to consult and confer with Yolo County Office of Education, Yolo County Health Department and the Yolo/Solano Air Quality Management District (Y/S AQMD) to help inform decisions about whether schools will remain open.

DJUSD is using the guidance from EPA Air Quality Guide for Particulate Pollution (image below) and Yolo/ Solano Air Quality Management District to determine what activities are safe for students and staff to do during the course of the day. We have imposed restrictions and are limiting activities based on the guidelines.

It is important to note that DJUSD has taken an even more precautionary approach by restricting all outdoor activities, even further than the EPA guidance provides given air quality levels this week, so as to limit outdoor exposure during the school day as much as possible.

If my child stays home because of air quality, is this an excused absence?
Yes. If you report an absence because of health concerns related to air quality, it will be counted as an excused absence.

Do classrooms and school buildings have filters in air systems to block smoke?
We have filtrations systems on all HVAC systems throughout the District that filter particulates down to three microns in size.

What if my child has asthma or doesn’t feel well?
Students and staff who have asthma or other health concerns should consult with their health care provider. If students become ill at school they should report to the school nurse or office and a parent will be contacted.

Are there plans to cancel school later this week, since the air quality forecast does not suggest improvements in the next couple of days?
DJUSD is carefully monitoring the air quality reports and forecasts. Staff continues to consult and confer with Yolo County Office of Education, Yolo County Health Department and the Yolo/Solano Air Quality Management District to help inform decisions about whether schools will remain open. We will let our school community know of any updates or changes.

Dear DJUSD Parents and Guardians,

We continue to experience smoky conditions in Davis from the ash blown from the Camp Fire in Butte County.  Throughout this weekend and all through today we have been monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI) as it has changed.  Today all DJUSD students remained indoors for lunch and physical education class, and doors to classrooms were kept closed to limit exposure to poor air quality.  Forecasts suggest that while winds may cause fluctuations in particulate matter, the air quality will likely remain unhealthy for several days.

All schools in DJUSD will remain open tomorrow; we will continue to monitor the air quality index to ensure safety of students and staff throughout the week.

DJUSD, in consultation with the Yolo County of Education and Yolo Health Department, recognizes the  EPA and Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District (YSAQMD) guidelines available at EPA Air Quality Guide for Particulate Pollution. It is important to note that DJUSD has taken an even more precautionary approach by restricting all outdoor activities, even further than the guidance provides, so as to limit outdoor exposure during the school day as much as possible.

Please know that DJUSD staff at every school site are working hard to monitor student needs and to put student health and safety first.  Considerations to protect children and sensitive groups from smoke, ash and poor air quality include:

  • Keeping children indoors with the doors and windows closed.

  • Suspending athletics and any outdoor school activities during or after school.

  • Monitoring students with medical conditions. Students with asthma, allergies, or a chronic health condition are at high risk from health effects related to wildfire smoke and ash.  Please consult your physician if you have concerns.

If you have concerns for your child’s health or they have medical conditions that may be aggravated by poor air quality, please keep your child home or contact your school office.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your school office.

11/12/2018

Dear DJUSD Families,

On this Veterans Day as we honor the many men and women who serve our country in the U.S. Military, we also recognize the heroic efforts of countless firefighters as well as the tireless efforts of many dedicated citizens in our community who are working to support the victims of the wildfires raging in our region as well as in the southern part of our state. Many in our school community have friends and loved ones who have been affected by the devastation.  DJUSD is partnering with the Davis Police Department to support relief efforts; the DJUSD District Office at 526 B Street will be a drop off point for supplies and donations for fire victims this week.

Air Quality in Davis

The fires also sending smoke and ash causing very poor air quality in and around our community.  While school will continue as scheduled, school administrators and staff will be monitoring the local Air Quality Index (AQI) regularly to determine safe levels of student activity each day.  In general, the next two days are predicted to be unhealthy for all groups, and so we anticipate the following protocols for schools:

  • All outside activity will be cancelled or moved indoors until air quality improves

  • After school athletic practices and games at our junior high schools and Davis Senior High will be rescheduled or moved inside

  • During the school day, classroom doors will remain closed to ensure safe air quality

Reminders for Parents

Thank you for your patience as we navigate the air quality and make decisions to keep student health our priority.  We also recognize that many students may choose not to commute to school by bike or on foot, so there may be more vehicle traffic at drop off or pick up.  Please plan your schedule accordingly.

Finally, if your student has allergies, asthma, or other medical conditions that are aggravated by the poor air quality, please be sure to contact your school office so our staff can help to monitor student health and well-being.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school office.

Announcing the Safety Task Force

Davis Joint Unified recognizes that the issue of student safety is not something we face alone, nor something we can fully address in isolation. To strengthen our safety net, we need our community’s support to identify risks and find ways to implement improvements in a timely manner.

The Davis Joint Unified School District cordially invites you to participate in a Safety Task Force. The Safety Task Force is designed to provide the Davis Joint Unified District with community input on a spectrum of safety-related considerations, challenges and solutions. The Safety Task Force process will also serve to direct feedback to a variety of school safety-related plans, including our Facilities Master Plan, scheduled to be finalized in May for Board of Education consideration.

All Safety Task Force meetings will take place in April 2018, and please see the schedule here. The Task Force meetings are open to the public and will include Spanish language interpretation.

March 13, 2018

Dear Emerson Families,

You may have heard that some students are planning on a walkout on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Emerson Junior High. Some of our students desire to make a peaceful statement against gun violence with this walkout. The nationwide walkout is expected to begin at 10:00 am (the last 5 minutes of 1st period) and last for 17 minutes.  Since period 2 starts at 10:10, the walkout will extend into 2nd period.

Below is important information from the Davis Joint Unified School District.

Students’ Rights

  • Generally speaking, students have the right to freedom of speech and assembly on school grounds as long as it does not disrupt the educational environment.

Staff Roles and Responsibilities

Maintaining a Safe and Functioning Campus

  • The main role of our staff during the walkout will be to provide a safe campus.
  • Teachers will remain in their classrooms, even if all students walk out.
  • Classified staff will remain at their work stations during the walkout unless directed to do otherwise.
  • Pre-identified site and district staff will work with Davis Police Department to supervise students who participate in the walkout.
  • Counselors will be available to assist students who need support.

Responding to Students’ Actions

  • Students who leave class to participate in protests, or for other unauthorized reasons, are considered unexcused. Teachers will submit accurate attendance records including recording unexcused absences and tardies.
  • Teachers will continue classroom activities with the least disruption possible and re-integrate students  who return with the least disruption possible
  • Teachers will be sensitive to the rights of students who choose to participate and those who do not.
  • Teachers may follow their normal grading practices regarding unexcused absences.

Ensuring Balance with Controversial Topics

  • Recent events have created opportunities for classroom lessons and discussion. Instruction concerning controversial topics shall be relevant to the adopted course of study and curricular goals and should be designed to develop students' critical thinking skills, ability to discriminate between fact and opinion, respect for others, and understanding and tolerance of diverse points of view.
  • When providing instruction related to a controversial issue, it must be presented in a balanced manner, addressing all sides of the issue without bias or prejudice and without promoting any particular point of view.  (Board Policy 6144)

Parents and guardians were notified of this potential walkout the via this month’s Parent Broadcast and in a Constant Contact message from Superintendent Bowes on March 13, 2018. please see the DJUSD website for more information on these statements @ www.djusd.net.

We recognize that there is a spectrum of viewpoints on this particular issue among our staff, students, and school community. At Emerson, we are united in supporting and appreciating each and every student we serve, and upholding a culture of safety and respect for diverse perspectives.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Scott Thomsen, Principal

Emerson Jr. High School

Wednesday, March 14 marks a day of national interest around gun control activism. Our schools, depending on the level of interest from students, are prepared to engage students in discourse and activities that model civic engagement.  We also know some students will want to be part of the walkouts that are occurring nationally. As a school district we support student First Amendment rights, but must ensure student safety and uphold district policies and administrative regulations.  We share with you the following guidance so our community is clear on how Davis Joint Unified will be approaching any student walkouts.

We need your feedback!
DJUSD is asking for parent/guardian and staff feedback that will help with our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP helps the district connect the funding we receive with the goals we have established, and parent/guardian input, as well as staff input, plays a critical role in identifying these goals. There are separate 10 minute surveys for staff members, parents of elementary students, parents of middle school students, and parents of high school students. If you have children in multiple levels please take each survey that applies.
Thank you so much for your time and feedback. It is greatly appreciated!

During construction bicyclists and pedestrians, traveling east and west who used the Davis Little League Path will need to change their route

Route Changes Include:

  • When leaving Davis High School or North Davis Elementary and traveling eastbound:

Follow the detour signs through Community Park to the intersection of F Street and 14th Street.  At F Street and 14th Street, enter into the bike lane and ride until you reach F Street and 11th Street.  At F Street and 11th Street, a crossing guard will assist you with crossing F Street.  Then travel to H Street and follow the detour signs to the H Street tunnel.

  • When traveling from Holmes Jr. High and traveling westbound:

Go through the H Street tunnel.  Follow the detour signs on H Street headed south towards 11th Street.  At 11th Street, continue to F Street where the crossing guard will assist you across the street.  Then travel to B Street.  At B Street turn north towards 14th Street.  There is a crossing guard at B and 14th.

  • Do not cut-through the apartment parking lots between F Street and H Street.
  • Do not ride your bike the wrong way on the road.

A map of the detour can be found here.

More information on the project can be found here.
