DRESS CODE

DJUSD RECOGNIZES THAT THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DRESS AND GROOMING OF A STUDENT RESTS PRIMARILY WITH STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS OR GUARDIANS.  

The District’s goal is to promote student safety and to create a respectful community that is welcoming to all students.  The District Dress Code policy applies to all schools in the district.  

Allowable Dress and Grooming:

Students must wear clothing that includes a shirt with pants, skirt, dress, or the equivalent

Shirts and dresses must-have fabric in the front and on the sides.

Clothing must cover undergarments; however, waistbands and bra straps may show

Fabric covering all private parts must not be transparent

Footwear must be worn at all times, and must not limit student participation in school activities

Hats and other headwear must allow the face to be visible and not interfere with the line of sight to any student or staff (hoodies must allow the student’s face and ears to be visible to staff)

Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education (PE), science labs, woodshop, and other activities where unique hazards exist

Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear

Non-Allowable Dress and Grooming:

Clothing may not depict, advertise, or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or other controlled substances

Clothing may not depict violence, obscenities, pornography, nudity, or sexual acts

Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or any other protected groups

Clothing must not threaten the health or safety of any other student or staff member

Generally, students who do not follow the dress code will be referred to the school office to correct the issue, which may include changing into PE clothes, wearing a t-shirt provided by the school, or being sent home to change.  Every effort will be made by school staff to avoid embarrassing or shaming the student.  All corrective actions will be reported to the parent/guardian.  

LUNCHTIME EXPECTATIONS

Following is a list of rules that apply to lunchtime and all other times when students are not in class.   All rules outlined in the Student Handbook apply as well. 

You are allowed to eat in assigned areas ONLY:  See New Lunch Boundaries below.  

Any area can be temporarily placed off-limits if students leave the area littered with trash.

NO FOOD IS ALLOWED ON THE BLACKTOP, on playing fields, library, or gym unless authorized during a school event

Please keep your hands and feet to yourself at all times:  Chasing, pushing, horseplay, play-fighting, water fighting, or other potentially dangerous physical activities are not appropriate at school. (Please note: No tackling or other unsafe play is allowed during games.)  

Put trash in garbage cans/trash containers, recycle and sort food waste appropriately:  

And leave your eating areas clean.

Please use appropriate recycling bins when throwing away trash and food waste.

Be respectful!  Respect self, others, and property.

Always use appropriate language:  No profanity, rude comments, racial/ethnic/sexual jokes or slurs, or name-calling.

Public Displays of affection other than handholding are inappropriate at school.

Emerson is a closed campus:  You must remain on campus during the entire school day, including lunchtime, unless you have a pass from the office and show it to the campus supervisor stationed in front of the school.  If you have an unscheduled 1st or 7th period you must be off-campus or in the Emerson Library.

All students must be off campus 15 minutes after the last bell unless being supervised or participating in an Emerson sport or other school-sponsored activity. A bell is programmed to ring, indicating it is time to leave campus.

NEVER BRING-TO-SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS

ENERGY DRINKS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON CAMPUS

Personal speakers are not allowed on campus.

The following items are illegal to possess on any school campus and will result in serious consequences:

Firearms, knives of any kind (including pocket knives), or anything that could be used as a weapon.  (Zero tolerance for these items at school and/or school-sponsored events.)  (ED Code 48900 b)

Alcohol, tobacco, or drugs of any kind (prescription medicine, as well as over-the-counter medication, must be stored in the Nurse’s Office).  (ED Code 48900 c, h, j)  

Matches, lighters, firecrackers or other explosives, E-Cigarettes, Vape-Pens.  

Other disruptive, illegal, or dangerous objects.

Aerosol cans, large sums of money, valuables of any kind unsafe or disruptive wear.

NEW LUNCH BOUNDARIES

In an effort to improve supervision as well as keeping our campus clean, we have created new lunch boundaries.  These boundaries will be clearly marked with painted lines. 

Students can eat lunch in the IDC, ODC, the Cafe and surrounding close areas

Food is not allowed on the blacktop, students need to finish their lunch before participating in activities 

Students are not allowed to eat in the hallways, all hallways are to be empty unless students are using a restroom

Students need to be on the West  side of the C and D  wings during lunch and not behind or between buildings

PLEASE clean up your trash after you eat

OFF LIMIT AREA EXPECTATIONS (During School Hours)

Behind buildings that are along fire lanes and property lines.

Along property lines at the edge of playing fields near houses..

Staff parking lot, or lawns in front of the school

CELL PHONE/HEADPHONE STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Cell phones can ONLY be used during lunch and are NOT be used for calls, texts, social media, games, checking the time etc.  during classes or passing periods.

Personal speakers are not to be used on campus.

Headphones can ONLY be used during lunch and are NOT to be used during classes or passing periods. Cell Phones must NOT be visible in any room on campus during nutrition breaks or class time. This INCLUDES passing periods.

Cell phones may NOT be used while a guest teacher is subbing for an absent teacher. 

Students' communication with parents using cell phones during school is discouraged. Therefore, please remind students that if they need to communicate with their parents, they should go to the front office to call home.

Cell phones should NOT be used to access Canvas, students should use their computers for Canvas.

Cell phones may NOT be used as a reading device during the school day.

Students are NOT allowed to record other students or staff members.

EXCEPTIONS:  Students that have specific reasons to have a phone out, medical, 504/IEP
